Wednesday, 5/4/11 … the Tarpon Tournament is coming soon

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be participating in the “Professional Tarpon Tournament Series” (PTTS), organized by the Tarpon Anglers Club.

The tournament occurs over a number of weeks during May and June and is based in and around Boca Grande Pass.

Looking forward to it!

Monday, 5/2/11 … working on the boat and thinking about snook

Big Captiva Snook - Caloosa Tourney, 2009.

I finished repainting the bottom of the boat this morning and caught up on some other maintenance.

A bunch of tournaments are coming up over the next several months so I’m starting to think about strategies and locations to catch big fish.

Here is a photo of a big snook we caught in the Caloosa Tourney two years ago.  It was quite the nice fish!  It came in at 43″ and 27 lbs.

I need to find him again!

Sunday, 5/1/11 … outlook for the week ahead

Sunrise off Captiva.

Fishing is all ways fun, but catching seems to bring more entertainment.

To make sure you are catching, plan your outing around the tides and weather patterns.

I know the words cold front don’t come up much on Sanibel and Captiva in the month of May, but we do get fronts. These fronts change the barometric pressure and wind direction in a unfavorable direction (most of the time). The barometric pressure affects fish very much. As a front barrels down the wind swings from our easterly trade wind (breeze) and stable pressure to a stiff south wind and lower pressure.

In these conditions, the fish sense the weather change/front coming and feed heavily which is good for fishing, almost too good.

After the front and rain passes through, the barometric pressure climbs and becomes higher than normal, which pushes the fish down to the bottom and makes them inactive. Not only does the high pressure make it tough for a bite, but the overfeeding from the days before keeps the fish satisfied for a couple days.

There is an old saying about fishing on Sanibel and Captiva in heavy winds. Wind out the east = fish bite the least. Wind out the south = in their mouth. Wind out the west = fish bite the best. Wind out the north = stay home.

It looks like fishing will be best this week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday and Friday will be tougher with the front forecast to pass through Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

The tides also look better for the beginning of the week with a larger fluctuation of water between high and low tides.

I would fish for tarpon and trout early in the day, redfish and snook in the mid-day, and sharks and tarpon in the afternoon and evening.
