Friday, 4/19/13: Sanibel, Captiva & Fort Myers Fishing Report ~ Fort Myers, Sanibel & Captiva: Catching Tarpon!

On today’s charter we decided that we were going to fish for Tarpon! Now, even though the main migration of Tarpon is not here yet, there are always a few fish, which live here year round, that usually gather in few secret spots during this time of the year.

So on today’s charter we went to one of my secret hot spots to fish for Tarpon! There using a special live bait we caught two fish both over 130 pounds!

Spanish Mackerel caught on Sanibel & Captiva charters
Spanish Mackerel caught on Sanibel & Captiva charters

On todays charter we first went to Blind Pass. There we caught a few nice Black Drum and some small Redfish. After that we decided to go fish the Sanibel oyster bar! There we caught some larger Redfish, two huge Snook, and we had a little Shark on the line!

Once we had our limit on Redfish, we decided to finish the day off by going to Redfish Pass! There we started off my fishing inside the pass where we caught a bunch of Sea Trout, and Ladyfish! Then we moved offshore of the pass, and there we ran into a school of Spanish Mackerel! We must have caught at least 15 of them before we had to head back in.

The fishing around here is always good, but today it was amazing!

Tuesday, 4/16/13: Sanibel, Captiva & Fort Myers Fishing Report ~ Fort Myers, Sanibel & Captiva: First Tarpon of the year!

On today’s charter we caught the first Tarpon of the year! We were fishing inshore of Captiva using lures to catch Ladyfish and Spanish Mackerel when I saw some Tarpon rolling off in the distance. So I decided to cast out a live bait and see if we could hook one!

Within 15 minutes we had a bite! He started to take out line in a hurry and I new we had a fight on our hands. About 20 minutes later we finally managed to reel in this nice 100 pound Tarpon all the way to the boat. After we took some video, I took the hook out of his mouth and let him go no worse for wear!

Boat Refitting, April 15, Sanibel & Captiva Islands & Fort Myers Charters & Fishing Guide Service.
Boat Refitting, April 15, Sanibel & Captiva Islands & Fort Myers Charters & Fishing Guide Service.

The good news is we had a great winter fishing season with tremendous weather, with the exception of several brief cold fronts in March.   We were/are out on charters almost every day, most of the time with 2-3 trips a day.

There really is no bad news when you have this type of good weather and fishing … but it means the boat has been worked hard and needs some refitting and refurbishing, including the hull, the engine and all the other aspects.

This is what we have been working on the last ten days or so while using a backup boat on the water.

We think we will have the main boat completely refitted in the next week or so!
